Photography is the ability to ignite a memory, the ability to capture an emotion without knowing the story behind it. My goal is to create a photograph that allows an individual to make ththe image their own, to assign personal meaning to a place, person, or object that they may not have noticed otherwise. My purpose is not to convey my personal beliefs, but to open the door for you, the ‘viewer’, to create or relive your own story. To show a common object from a different angle, a different point of view, or a in a different light.
Photography is the luck of the draw. Magic from the second you press the button to the second the image is exposed. I believe in the surprise of the film. While I respect the art of digital photography and the skill of computer manipulation and the endless possibilities they offer, I have a more old school approach to my work. My manipulation is in the form of subject, experiments with light, shutter speed and double exposure. It’s having the bare minimum and consenting to the grand expedition.
My work is not shocking – it is, I hope, thoughtful and subtle while still offering commentary on culture, relationships, the natural world and the unknown lives of everyday objects. Is it just a photograph of an old car? Does it speak to romanticizing an era in American history? Is it a wish for simpler times? Commentary on the idea of usefulness and progress? Or is it just the play of light off old chrome... Is it all of these things at once and nothing, too?
